Has been a long week, Paris at LeWeb3, then work and finally the Girl Geek Dinner on friday nigh… and this morning I managed to sleep a lot… and that really make feel great.
As everyone can see from Internet News and Comments, LeWeb3 hadn’t been so bright as last year… but has been great for networking, I managed to meet finally Loren of 1938 Media, that really was worth this Paris Trip… but there weren’t such great speakers this year… and personally Michael Arrington made some bad comments. During one of the last sessions he practically said that “European are Lazy”… a quote that really I didn’t liked… and no-one in the room liked. (Loic LeMeur has a good post on it)
I know that Michael Arrington owns Techcrunch that is considered by the web as one of the point of referral for the web business… but Internet is Global and not only Americans… simply Americans are better noticed by the media, cause they have a different mentality and are helped by a common language, that almost everyone in the web business knows and use to relate with the others… Doing business in Europe is more complicated and cause of the differences of culture that people and companies has to face. Americans never have to deal wit that kind of differences… cause people that move in America tend to shift on their mentality… mentality that I ADORE. But being the most known doesn’t mean that other are not good.
As Italian and most of all as European I can see that Internet is not really working as I would imagine it should be. Internet for instance is a place where everyone can have a voice, and where everyone can have a voice (An Internet Voice 😉 ) that means a better democratization of the ideas and also the impossibility to manipulate. Things that are in some way I can see happen.
Media Manipulation is an aspect of public relations in which partisans create an image or argument that favours their particular interests. Such tactics may include the use of logical fallacies and propaganda techniques, and often involve the suppression of information or points of view by crowding them out, by inducing other people or groups of people to stop listening to certain arguments, or by simply diverting attention elsewhere. That is what is happening at the moment about Europe… people on Internet are talking about the American Market and about the American internet/Media “Gurus” (Little Excursus – some are great, other not in my opinion, anyway and at the end at every conference we hear the same people that make the same presentations and speaks. But they have o understand that people travel and talk and even judge your work, in my opinion cause they are payed they have to bring something new every time) but the real guilty are not them cause they are free to speak of what they want… the guilty are European People, and I feel guilty.
I know that this is hard to understand, but lot of us focus on global and forgot that there are great people nearby that are doing a great job on developing this common thing called internet. We have to wake up and pretend some and more European coverage, despite of European borders, languages, history and cultures. Europe is rising and America in some way are afraid of that… we have to understand and become global by starting local… good ideas and great people are everywhere, there is just the need to give them a chance and give them some coverage… then people and internet would do the rest. That is what I think… and I will start my 2009 with this idea.
